I wish the internship had been a little bit longer so I could have learned more about the Sales and Use Tax process

What I liked

I really liked the amount of traveling I got to do in my time at Ryan. Also, I enjoyed how they kind of threw you into work. You were able to learn through co-workers or managers. Most of my questions were answered and I was able to get walked through certain tasks that were asked of me.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship started early than mid June. Being able to work for the whole summer would have been more beneficial for both parties in my opinion.

Advice

It's okay to go into the internship nervous. I had no idea what I was going to do before going in to the office, but with the training and help from team members/manager you will be able to feel comfortable in your time at Ryan.

Commercial Property Tax Intern

What I liked

From day one with HR sending all the interns to Dallas for onboarding to my very last day of working in the Chicago office I would say the overall culture of Ryan is what stood out the most to me. Everyone is very approachable and very open to any questions you might have along the way. The workload is great and you learn a lot about the industry. I loved being able to communicate with interns around the country on a weekly basis through meetings and various projects as well. Finally, I thought being able to sit down, learn, and listen to professionals at Ryan weekly was something that was very useful during my internship.

What I wish was different

The only thing that I wish had been different for the internship would be the start date. I got done with school at Michigan State the first couple days of May, so there was a large period in-between which I was not working and diving into the experience of what it is like to work at Ryan.

Advice

My best piece of advice would go into the internship ready to give 110% because you will learn so much useful information. I had no previous experience in the real estate tax industry, but I went in with an open mind and very determined attitude to make a positive impact. Lastly, do not be afraid to say yes to a project that seems out of your comfort zone. I made sure to say yes to a lot of projects because I know it would help me grow as a professional and I am so glad that I did that. Finally, network as much as you can with as many people as you can because doing so will allow you to see a greater picture about what makes Ryan so special and it is because of the people that work here. Everyone that I talked to was extremely kind and willing to give me advice on basically anything.

Credits/Incentives Intern

What I liked

I loved working in a team environment and I had a really great time working with the team I was assigned to. My team, as well as everyone in the Pittsburgh office, were very welcoming to us interns and I had a great experience working there over the summer.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish that would have been different is the start date. We started in mid-June and I think it would've been better to have started early in the summer rather than later. Other than as said before, it was a great experience.

Advice

A piece of advice is to go in there with an open mind and be a hard worker. I had no experience in tax before this internship and I learned a lot throughout the way with having an open-minded approach. As long as they see you putting in the effort and willing to learn, you will have a good experience working here.

Abandoned and Unclaimed Property Intern

What I liked

I enjoyed learning about Unclaimed property and Ryan as a company. I loved working in a team environment because everyone was so helpful and welcoming. The recruiting team at Ryan does great at helping the interns get situated in their roles and to keep in touch with other interns. Overall, it was a great experience and there was a lot to like!

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish was different would be the living experience. There was not much direction on places to live during the internship. Once I found one it was great, I just wish there were cheaper alternatives or better guidance.

Advice

You will learn a lot about the industry you are going into. Don't be nervous about the opportunity or concerned that you may not know enough. The people there are all amazing and will walk you through the process until you are confident in what you should be doing.

What I liked

I really enjoyed my internship at Ryan. The members of the team I was a part of were all very kind, patient, and helpful. I appreciated the fact that each and every question I asked was answered, and I definitely appreciated the trust that my team members had in me. Working on multiple projects gave me valuable insight about the type of work that consultants at Ryan perform on a regular basis.

What I wish was different

The one thing I wish had been different was the starting date of the internship. It would have been great to have started a couple weeks sooner, and I'm sure other interns feel the same.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Your team members will expect you to ask many questions, and they will be more than happy to answer them.

What I liked

This experience was beyond my expecations. I enjoyed having the opportunity to be a part of a team based working environment. The culture at Ryan is great, and I was always busy with projects that expanded my knowledge and understanding of commercial property taxes.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish had been different would be starting the internship earlier in the summer and make it a few weeks longer.

Advice

Don't be nervous going into the internship and never be afraid to ask questions. Everyone there is very friendly and open to helping you on anything you need.

What I liked

The atmosphere at Ryan, LLC was great! Everyone in the office was fun to be around and always willing to help if you asked. The team that I was assigned to was awesome, they welcomed me with open arms and took the time to teach me everything I needed to know to be a successful part of the team!

What I wish was different

Overall the experience with Ryan was great. However, I do wish that the internship lasted longer than just 8 weeks. I learned a lot in those 8 weeks but if the internship was longer I believe that I would be able to learn even more and create connections to the things I have already learned.

Advice

The whole experience from the on boarding process all the way until my last day was great but fast so enjoy all of it. I would most definitely do it again if I had the opportunity.

What I liked

Working as an intern for Ryan, I had the opportunity to fly out to their headquarters in Dallas, Texas to kick off the beginning of the internship with all the other interns from across the country. Overall my favorite part of working for Ryan was my ability to connect as well as travel to other Ryan offices to work with different Property Tax teams.

What I wish was different

I wish the start date could have been sooner. I ended school at the beginning of May and then started the internship middle of June. I could have been using to time working and gaining more experience in the property tax department.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is be open to new challenges. This internship is full of many different projects, don't be afraid to ask for help. Also try to make as many connections as possible, reach out to other departments and other offices and offer to help with their projects as well.

What I liked

This experience really exceeded my expectations. The overall culture is amazing with this company. Everybody loves to teach and spread the knowledge they gained when they first started out, which went a long way when I first started. Definitely one of my most memorable summers.

What I wish was different

Nothing. This experience had everything I was looking for in an internship and helped me grow professionally as well as personally.

Advice

Prioritize. This job has a plethora of things going on at the same time. If you have a plan on how to complete the tasks, you should have no problem excelling in that aspect.

You are going to do real work. This is not a 'get coffee for the boss' position. This is a you-do-full-time-work internship. It's very useful.

What I wish was different

Sometimes work is really heavy and sometimes work is really light. Overall it balances out.

Advice

Don't stress the first couple of weeks. It will make sense it due time.

Marketing and Events Intern

What I liked

Overall, this internship program was amazing! The internship kicks off with an internship retreat in Dallas lead by Campus Recruiting, and it's a great way to learn more about Ryan from employees, have onboarding with different teams like IT and Payroll, and network with other interns. My manager was super flexible and I was able to work hybrid. I interned with Marketing and Events, and felt very welcome on my first day of the internship. The culture and values at Ryan are present every day, one example being the awesome opportunity of being able to serve the community on RyanShares Day. You are welcomed with a RyanBuddy, which is an employee who is there to help you with anything! The work and projects my manager and team gave me was always meaningful and beneficial work, which made this internship feel so rewarding.

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask as many questions as you can! Your manager and team are there to support you and teach you about the practice area you are interning in. In the end, these two months are very rewarding and beneficial towards your future!

Sales and Use Tax Consultant

What I liked

I really enjoyed the culture of the firm and the people that were on my team.

What I wish was different

I have nothing that I would change from my experience. The only thing that was an issue was when I was going through the interview process, they only wanted me to go into sales and use tax when I wanted to go property tax. This is only because I am a Finance and Accounting Major and they want anyone with accounting to go sales and use. In my offer they were very accommodating and gave me the option to work in property tax in the city I desired.

Advice

If you are interested in tax I would put Ryan, LLC. at the top of your list with the Big Four. The work-life balance is much better from what I've heard and they promote mostly from within.

Property Tax Intern

What I liked

My summer at Ryan was overall a great internship experience. Despite many companies canceling or delaying internships due to COVID-19, Ryan was still able to offer students a summer of learning about tax consulting! I was able to learn a lot about the details and processes of property tax, while working on a variety of projects for several different clients. Although the pandemic prevented me from getting to witness more of the tax appeal process, my managers and the campus recruiting team were able to provide insight on what a normal summer would be like. From spending 2 months here, I could see that Ryan is a great place to work. The people are all driven and helpful. The work atmosphere is both independent and cooperative which makes for a good work life balance. The company leadership is very easy to talk to and friendly. The campus recruiting team does a great job helping the summer interns all the way through the process!

What I wish was different

With the pandemic, it was hard to experience every piece of the tax appeal process. It would have been cooler to be able to go more in depth on projects, including site visits and appeal hearings. However, overall, COVID was handled well by my team and Ryan as a whole.

Advice

There is a pretty steep learning curve, especially for people without a real tax/accounting background like myself. Ask questions, look up explanations, and use downtime to familiarize yourself more with Property Point, CoStar, and general tax processes.

Property Tax Consulting Intern

I loved the MyRyan flexibility, the friendly colleagues, the positivity of RyanPRIDE, and the organization of the company!

What I wish was different

I would have preferred to be able to be in the office more for the learning aspect, but due to the pandemic, I understandably could not. But the company adapted the internship program very well to fit COVID and I am still grateful for the experience.

Property Tax Consultant Intern

What I liked

This internship experience was the perfect way to kickstart my career as a young professional. Property tax is a complex, interesting, and ever changing subject. The 10 weeks I spent at Ryan gave me a great, broad-scoped introduction to property tax and all of its facets. I learned and practiced, in depth, the 3 approaches to property valuation, practiced my accounting and financial skills, and learned more than I knew was possible about Real Estate in 10 weeks. My team in Denver was supportive and inclusive to me, which made me feel comfortable and helped increased my productivity.

What I wish was different

Because of COVID, I was not able to be in a fully occupied office. This is no ones fault, but I wish I could have experienced the office environment when at full capacity.

Advice

Property tax sounds a lot less fun than it actually is. I went into the internship with no idea on what property tax consulting actually is, and left the internship interested and intrigued with a topic I had never considered before. My advice is to go into whatever experience you are about embark on with an open mind.

Property Tax Consulting

What I liked

Working at Ryan has been an extraordinary experience. On the very first day, I was welcomed and embraced by managers and employees, the culture, and values of the firm are present in the office and allow for an exceptional work experience. I received outstanding training and was given the space to make mistakes and learn from them. The work I did as an intern was meaningful and positively impacted the firm. If you are interested in a career in tax, I would keep Ryan in mind.

What I wish was different

I only wish I had the opportunity to go to Dallas for the annual intern retreat. However, this is not their fault due to COVID-19; the campus recruiting team was very flexible with the situation and made the best out of the summer internship.
