The reporting locations are Old Town State Historic Park and San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic Park. Under the direction of the Interpretation and Education Manager, the Park Interpretive Specialist researches and explains the history of early San Diego and its inhabitants, as well as other relevant history related work. Interpretive programs are relayed in person, in writing, digital platforms, and through social media to various audiences including K-12 and the general public.
Must have the ability to read, write, and speak English at a level required for successful job performance; demonstrate the ability to follow directions; learn work procedures and park rules and regulations quickly; perform varied physical manual tasks (lift 30 pounds); meet, interact and address the public effectively and successfully; willingness to work weekends and holidays; willingness to work odd or irregular hours as well as wear and maintain prescribed uniform and/or Period Attire while maintaining good hygiene habits and setting an example for other park staff, volunteers/interns. Must be honest, reliable, dependable, polite, and courteous at all times to park visitors, staff, and volunteers/interns. Must set an exemplary example.

This position may work up to 1500 hours per year/in a 12 consecutive month period.

- Using knowledge of the Natural, Cultural and Recreational Resources within the District, conduct interpretive activities for park visitors such as Oral presentation Multimedia presentations Hands on activities and craft projects for the Junior Ranger, school tours, and Campfire programs.
- Using knowledge of the Natural, Cultural and Recreational Resources within the District, provide meaningful and accurate interpretive information to park visitors and conduct interpretive activities such as Informal talks, answering questions and utilizing tangible items for educational opportunities in settings including Educational Walks and Talks, Roving Interpretation, Visitor Center and Education Stations.
- Work with general public and answer questions on rules, regulations, and facilities for the public and provides directions to the public, and promotes a positive relationship with park volunteers and the public through professional and friendly interactions.
- Equivalent to graduation from college (1) with major work in natural sciences or human history
OR
- Major work in education with specialization in natural science or human history. Full-time paid work performing duties similar to those listed under "TYPICAL TASKS" above may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required education on the basis of one season (three months) of experience being equal to one year of education.
