2024 Summer On the Canals Programs Internship

The Erie Canal Museum is looking for a detail-oriented and motivated individual to assist with educational and recreational programming. This position is a partnership between the Erie Canal Museum, the New York Power Authority’s Reimagine the Canals initiative and On the Canals. 

The Erie Canal Museum engages the public in the story of the Erie Canal’s transformative impacts on peoples and places in the past, present, and future. We are stewards and interpreters of Erie Canal related materials and heritage.

During your employment, you will work on the following initiatives: 

  • Serve as project lead for the Museum’s summer-long weekly Walking Tour series with tours in Syracuse and Baldwinsville;
  • Conduct research about the Erie Canal as well as the abolition and women’s rights movements;
  • Lead walking tours and engage with visitors at each of the tour sites; and
  • Produce and distribute marketing materials for Museum programs;
  • Work with Museum staff to implement additional educational and recreational programs throughout the summer.

Requirements: 

  • Completed coursework or have experience in Museum Programs, Outdoor Recreation, Tourism, Events Planning, Public History, or related fields
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Availability on Saturdays from June 8 – August 17
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Available up to 30 hours per week, for a total of 350 hours between May and August

Availability & Wages:

  • Start date: May 14 or May 21. 
  • End date: August 17 or August 24. 
  • A successful candidate will need to be available up to 30 hours per week, Tuesday - Saturday from 10AM - 5PM. Total hours for the summer can be up to 350 hours.
  • The schedule can have some flexibility, but Saturday availability from June 8 – August 14 is a requirement. 
  • Wages: $16.00 per hour
