Curatorial Research Fellowship

Janette Handley Curatorial Research Fellowship (Spring/Summer/Fall)

Fellowship Purpose:

The Curatorial Research Fellowship is designed to provide emerging professionals with meaningful, hands-on experience in archival research, collections care, and public interpretation. TVHS hosts a dynamic calendar of exhibits and programs, including its four signature annual events: the Candlelight House Tour, Spirits Tour, Culper Spy Day, and the Barn and Garden Tour.
       

The research fellow will play a key role in supporting these programs by conducting original archival and historical research, assisting with exhibitions, and aiding in the cataloging and preservation of the museum’s collections. This fellowship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to community-based history while gaining valuable experience in the field of museums and historical organizations.

Responsibilities:

Interns will develop a digital storytelling project using STQRY in collaboration with the Research and Collections Archivist. The internship includes the expectation that the project will be completed and prepared for public release by the end of the internship, serving as an accessible platform that promotes and enhances the heritage of the Three Village community.
 

Catalog and accession archival materials into the museum’s collections database.

Assist in inventorying and rehousing the archaeological collection.

Support exhibit curation, including co-hosting stakeholder roundtables, installation, and de-installation.

Rehouse and preserve archival and artifact collections under curatorial guidance.

Scan and digitize archival documents for improved accessibility.

Conduct local and regional research using TVHS’s collections to support exhibits and educational programming.

Lead guided tours and engage with the public as needed.

 

Qualifications

Required:

 Bachelor’s degree in History, Anthropology, Museum Studies, Art History, Archival Studies, Historic Preservation, or a related field, or current enrollment in their junior or senior year of a bachelor’s degree program in one of these disciplines.

Demonstrated interest in Long Island and/or Northeast regional history.

Valid driver’s license and ability to commute to Setauket, including off-site storage facilities.

Ability to lift and carry boxes weighing 20+ lbs.

Preferred:

Self-motivated individual with strong organizational, research, and communication skills.

Familiarity with collections/content management software, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite.

Experience with public programming, social media platforms, or digital outreach.

Knowledge of GIS or mapping tools.

Fellowship Terms

Stipend: $5,000

Duration: 5 + months (with possibility of extension based on performance and funding)

Hours: Flexible schedule, approximately 10–15 hours per week, with some evening or weekend work during major programs and events.
